            Hello Rob!
I heard about your VR enthusiasm, knowing you built a model lift in your garden. So I try to give you some informations about the Von Roll life expectancy in general here in Europe

(In Barcelona they scrapped the lift it, as usual...)

Depending on the regulations in the different countries, it is very difficult to keep VR102s (and Giovanolas) running now and even more in the future:
Once the concession of operation issued by governmental authorities runs out (usually after a couple of decades, depending on the country), the ropeway must be upgraded to meet the current safety regulations. In many cases it is possible to upgrade (jig back ropeways for instance), but in the case of lifts with certain types of detachable grips there is nothing to do unfortunately. One safety imperative is that if the rope derails, the rope must be prevented from falling to ground by rope catchers attached along the sheaves. This is nothing new. But what is new for a couple of years now is that grips must be able to travel over a tower even if the cable is derailed (hanging in the rope catcher).
And, as you you know, this is not possible for the VR kind of grips. They would crash into the sheaves and that's it.

So sad as it is, VR's will all be teared down in the upcoming years.
IMHO, there are two VR's in Switzerland left- both are being substituted this or next year. Since the VR102 is known to every swiss kid because it is making part of industrial heritage, groups tried to preserve the existing VR's, but no luck. The central government would have had to modify state laws, which they did not. The managers of VR ropeways also showed no interest in keeping their VR ropeway as a sort of museum lift. It's a matter of cultural awarness and education, don't expect that from managers in this turism business...

However, there are still two VR's in Bavaria which might continue operation for some years because in Germany regulations differ a bit. Germany has no ropeway constructors left, so there was no lobby making pressure for paranoid regulations.
Germany has adopted the same technical regulations (They're EU regulations), but as long as the concessions don't run out, the old lifts are ok. And Bavarian concessions seem not to run out..

One runs in Garmisch Partenkirchen, the other VR is near Berchtesgaden- go have a visit :-)

            regards,
            kris

Humm humm........... are you speaking for shure?

              That's really interesting!
How do they manage that? Do they stopped the clock ticking?

It's a Bavarian federal law? Can a federal law be stronger than a national one if concernig safety issues?

Well...if teutonic Germans found a possible path for preserving .........

The "Eckbauerbahn" in Garmisch - Partenkirchen is no real VR, it´s a Giovanola copy fabricated by the german manufacturer PHB (Pohlig - Heckel - Bleichert).
